CULTURAL COMPETITION
Are you ready for the roll of the dice, guys?
Dice rattling. We got “CULTURAL COMPETITION.”
Let’s begin. Those were the days when our school was under the command of Vice Principal, Wing Commander Vijay Singh Dangwal. This was a party phase in the timeline of our school. We were taken to exclusive places for our trips, and the school budget was focused on schemes that made us jolly. And one such scheme was the cultural competition.
Okay now, getting back to the job at hand — the cultural competition was held between the four houses, competing for the Best Song, Best Dance, Best Skit, Best MC, and Best Special Category Event — in which anything different could be performed, as per the houses’ choice. The house that scored the highest points across all these categories got to be the champions, lifting the cultural trophy.
Sharma Sir (our Social Studies teacher) was spearheading this competition. Man! He was one hell of a tensed person.
As soon as the announcement was made, every house got excited and began its plan of action. To do something unique, our then house master, Mr. Hari Prasad (our English teacher), had originally scripted a skit — a funny adaptation of Draupadi Vastra Haran (the disrobing of Draupadi) scene from the Mahabharat, set in modern times. Hence, it was called “Modern Mahabharat.”
I was chosen for the character of Duryodhana in the skit. We donned zany attires — a mix of modern wear, DIY crowns, and other ornaments resembling those worn by the people of that era. During our rehearsals in full costume, it was a laugh riot for the audience (fellow participants from all houses) seated in the Auditorium.
Apparently, the cultural competition began with our house’s turn. (Later, I got to know this was decided by some lottery system.) Our skit was placed first among the events, setting the mood for the audience.
Other houses were also well-prepared with their arsenal of events. The cultural competition’s impact was surely something to be cherished in our memories for time immemorial.
And There’s still a lot more about the event, but more info-dumping would only elongate this blog to the state of boredom. So, I bid adieu to you guys for now.
Take care.
